Design Brief

Design- Your challenge is to create and present a design concept for a simple object optimized for 2 part moulding. Beware! This might not be as simple as it sounds…

Research- research and compile a Taxonomy of Materiality. This personal classification system/tool should document your critical exploration of issues relating to materials and associated production processes. Your Taxonomy should describe your understanding of a range of materials and industrial production processes as well as associated themes and issues relative to design and consumption.

PFD501- Specialist skills

Design- Using the properties of cork as the main driver for this project, this design exploits the thermal insulation and softness of the cork to mould it into a shell for an oven dish. It’s designed to retain heat and keep food warmer for longer, especially at long family gatherings where food is served at the table. The cork’s natural softness protects surfaces from the heat whilst preventing scratching from the ceramic dish and its thermal insulation property helps keep heat within, protecting both hands and surfaces when dish is taken out the oven

Research- The taxonomy, which I laid out in a book format, features materials and industrial manufacturing processes that interest me. I used graphic icons and pictographs to display information in a way that could be understood quickly at a glance. This document is one that I will add to in the future and will refer to it to aid future design decisions

  • Oven dish was slip cast and assembled then glazed to make the dish food safe

Cork was moulding with adhesive using heat and pressure to form the granules into a solid form

  • Designed to keep food warmer for longer whilst protecting surfaces from damage
