Design Brief:

Your challenge is to design homewares that could be batch produced and that celebrate ideas and principles associated with product provenance. You can produce either 5 batch produced multiples of a single product, or, single prototypes of a product range (with 3-5 products in the range). Your design concept should consider: Product Values and narratives associated with product provenance, how the products could be optimized for batch production, and how the products would be displayed and packaged for retail

Using damaged rowing boats as the base for the designs, this range of homeware focuses on celebrating the history and form of the boats chosen. The aim was to select and highlight key features of the boats to make unique products and allow the users to gain insight into their history by using NFC tags to show their past and origins. Where possible, original hardware such as nails and screws were reused to maintain as much of the original boat features as possible. Much of the cosmetic damage on the surface of the boats were kept as they reflected the history of the boat and the journey it has been on whilst structural damage was repaired using techniques that allowed the repair to blend in with the rest of the boat.

  • The products are all made from a rowing boat with has a mahogany plywood hull.

The base for the lamp is made from laser cut plywood with an acrylic top that has been covered in a translucent film. A brass strip was applied on the side using brass nails.

The glass on the coffee table is 8mm tempered glass to fit safety standards

  • 3 products were included in this project, a lamp, coffee table, and planter. The lamp is a floor lamp that provides subtle lighting. The coffee table is a 2-in-1 table and book holder as on end is open to place the books whilst the other has a glass top to function as a table. The planter has different options for the hatch for the user can customise it to their liking. the options are a plant, an opaque hatch, or a tranlucent cover. this allows the user to choose if they want uplighting or not
