Deliverables:
1. 3 X A3 presentation sheets (created using InDesign) that summarise and Document your 3 steps of work: your research, your idea generation and your 3D outcomes. Save/export your sheets as pdf files and upload them to the DLE
2. A high quality sketch model of your proposed concept (include images of your model on your Outcomes sheet). There may be an opportunity to display your sheets and your model in an exhibition to celebrate the outcomes of the project
3. Pecha kucha Presentation of research project
Pecha Kucha presentation

This presentation is about Rollo Bryant who was born in London but is now based in Rotterdam in the netherlands. This is where he set up his design brand called rollo studio which focuses on bespoke lighting and used 3D printing to produce their products which have been presented at design shows around the world
-
Rollo studio uses freehand sculpting as well as computer softwares to create their products. Their focus in design is creating positive environmental change whilst still making visually appealing products. Rollo's fascination with organic structures has been projected throughout all of his designs and they all represent separate parts of the natural world
-
The process used to manufacture these lights is binder jet printing which is an additive process where an industrial printhead deposits a liquid binding agent onto a thin layer of powder particles, in this case sand. This process can create intricate geometries which makes it suitable for these products. As the sand provides support when printing, added supports aren't required which reduces waste and print time
-
The main material that rollo studio uses is quartz sand which is a raw material and was chosen for its thermal resilience and high strength to ensure that each piece produced was heat resistant and durable. Using quartz sand for 3d printing is considered to be environmentally friendly as the sand is a naturally occurring material and any unused sand can be used again for other projects
-
The Areole collection is a range of wall mounted lighting pieces called 'suns' that are inspired by sunflowers and their intricate inner disks. Each light fixture has a unique surface which creates different patterns of contrasting light and shadows. These functional art pieces come in 2 colour options of black and beige making them suitable for any space.
-
The dune collection is a series of lighting pieces which are inspired by desert landscapes and mimic the flow and movement of sand dunes using organic forms. The quartz sand used diffuses the light and creates a red glow which reflects the dusty haze of a desert. This collection is still ongoing and wall mounted and hanging lamps will soon be included
-
The Dome table lamp is part of the dune collection and has flowing and organic shapes as well as a textured surface to reflect the sand dunes. The light in this lamp is dimmable so that users can decide how much of the red glow is produced. Even when its not in use, the form of this product makes it aesthetically pleasing so it can just be used as a decorative piece.
-
The Barchan floor lamp is also part of the dune collection which is inspired by the sand dunes. The name is taken from a type of dune that is crescent shaped and is reflected in the forms curves. This piece differs from the dome as the light is emitted throughout its entire length instead of just the top which is seen in the dome.
-
The Lavora suede table lamp is part of the ongoing lavora collection. It takes inspiration from the intricate formation of desert sand dunes as they morph and shift in the breeze. The beige colouring reflects that of the dunes and adds to the aesthetic. The form is made of rolling curves and uses shadows to define depth.
-
The Urban stem collection is an ongoing project which aimed to create structures that look like they've grown straight from the ground to resemble the wild character of organic matter.Biomimicry has played a key role in research as they tried to find ways of modelling organic geometry digitally. This project explores ideas to reduce our impact in urban design
-
This piece is called the Oozy and its part of the Urban stem collection. This product was intended as an interior light sculpture and it visually reacts and changes in accordance to its environment. The light that emerging from the core softly lights up the centre which is revealed through crevices and cavities creating a soft glow. It is made of PLA, PVA, and sand
-
This piece is called Viva and its part of the urban stem collection. This interior light sculpture is in the style of organic modern which is characterised by light and earthy tones, natural textures, and sustainable materials. It stands at 1.12m tall and weighs 12kg making it a floor lamp
-
This floor lamp is called della and its part of the urban stem collection. it stands at 1.2m tall and weighs 15kg. This lamp has significant symmetry throughout its design which is inspired by the symmetry in the natural world. The deep maroon colour and rough texture of the sand makes the piece look like its been carved out of stone.
-
This is the orbital collection which is inspired by the natural world and brings the organic forms and structures found in nature to life. The soft and diffused light that is emitted highlights the curves and textures of the designs which celebrate the processes of nature. This collection brings a sense of wonder to the complexity of the natural world.
-
Olea is part of the orbital collection and is inspired by the idea that all kinds of cosmic forces sculpt orbital matter so intricate forms could exist. The rolling curves of this structure allow a mix of light and shadow to create depth. It also allows for light to be diffused softly across the surface, which further highlights the texture of the piece
-
This piece is called Requiem and its a light sculpture with intertwining curves that have different forms and personalities from each side. This encourages the viewers to come up with their own impressions and interpretations of the pieces. It was inspired by those who thrive in hostile environments where resources are minimal and also explores the idea of codependency between organisms
-
this is the Odyssey light sculpture which is inspired by cosmic forces that shape the natural world. Its form mixes the natural and synthetic which results in a functional lamp that is also a piece of art. The odyssey is also part of a new ongoing project called liquid roots which aims to address the depletion of biodiversity in urban environments.
-
My favourite piece that rollo studio have made is the SUN VXS1. This is my favourite design as its mesmerising to look at and really draws you in. I also love how the piece plays with light and shadows and how that contrasts to the black centre
-
My least favourite light that rollo studio has produced would have to be the odyssey. This piece has holes and tunnels that kind of reminds me of ants nests and it makes my skin a bit itchy just looking at it and i can imagine a ton of ants crawling out from the holes
-
To summarise this presentation, Rollo studio is a design brand based in Rotterdam which specialises in creating bespoke lighting that is also a piece of art. Their pieces are all inspired by the natural world as they use organic forms in their designs. Sustainability is also very important to them which is why they use quartz sand and binder jet printing instead of regular 3d printing.
