Design Brief
1. Design your ideal table tennis Bat, you can design it however you want. For this exercise we want you to find the magic of the design that will make it special and related to you. Does it work in a special way, has an interesting combination of materials, represents a type of space or even a community…? The magic is yours to find!
2. Design the wire spectacles that represent them; in this project we want you to get to know someone within the studio and design some wire glasses that match their personality and style.
TDD400
1. Designed to be unpredictable, this table tennis bat has a mind of it's own. The double sided bat has a convex and a concave side which have different functions to confuse opponents further. The design that looks like a wand of dark magic comes equipt with its own special 'ball' which is equally as unpredictable, making it perfect for people who are undecisive.
2. Wire spectacles designed for a person who loves nature and doing anything crafty. With the favourite colours being green, brown, and other earthy tones, these have been incorporated into the design as winding ivy around the frames and arms. Having grown up in a pub called the royal oak and owning a gecko, these have also been featured as singular line images above the frames

Bat models were initially made from cardboard and paper mache but as they developed further they were 3D printed to allow for more structure. The final prototype was 3D printed from resin to give it a smooth finish as well as providing some weight so it feels more comfortable in the hands of the user. The surface was primed and painted black with additional green and white details in the centre and grooves to create the illusion of it opening up.
The wire spectacles frame was made from thick wire which was then wrapped in thinner floral wire. Wax coated crepe paper was added to the spectacles as vines to reflect the nature theme. The wax also allowed it to be attached to the frame easily without glue.

The bat is made for people who are indecisive so they don’t have to choose where to hit the ball, the bat does that for them. Included with the bat is a ball, which is equally as unpredictable with its 20 sides and made from ABS which is the same material as regular table tennis balls
